Renew Counselling Wins ‘Counselling Service of the Year’ at Prestige Awards for Second Year Running

Renew Counselling has been named Counselling Service of the Year at the Corporate Livewire Prestige Awards for the second consecutive year. This recognition underscores the charity’s outstanding contribution to mental health support in Essex and East London.

From its beginnings as the West Ham Central Mission in 1904, Renew Counselling has become an essential pillar of support for individuals of all ages, offering accessible and affordable counselling services to those struggling with mental health challenges. Over the past year, the charity delivered nearly 15,000 sessions, assisting more than 1,000 clients in overcoming emotional difficulties.

The judges praised Renew Counselling for its inclusive approach, remarking:

“Renew Counselling offers a crucial service for those members of society who can sometimes be left behind. The mental health experts are dedicated to providing low cost, accessible and responsive counselling and psychotherapeutic interventions to anyone that needs it.”

Commenting on the award, Nikki Schuster, CEO said:

“We are deeply honoured to be recognised as Counselling Service of the Year for the second year in a row. This award is a reflection of the hard work and commitment of our entire team, who are dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of those who turn to us for help. The growing demand for mental health services is evident, and we are more determined than ever to ensure that our services remain accessible to all who need them.”

Young Peoples Counselling Service, Brentwood merges with Renew Counselling and Training

We’re delighted to announce that from April 2023, Renew will be offering counselling for young people from YPCS Centre in Brentwood.

Counselling has been taking place at YPCS (Young Peoples Counselling Service) for over 30 years, with counsellors supporting the young people of Brentwood and the surrounding areas to improve their mental health and emotional wellbeing. With the charity’s Director, Claire White, retiring this year, YPCS has decided that the best move for the service is for it to be taken over by a larger organisation that runs in a similar way, with a reputation for clinical excellence.

Bringing YPCS under the Renew umbrella

We’re therefore pleased to announce that after careful consideration and a thoughtful period of transition, we have brought YPCS under the umbrella of Renew Counselling and Training. From April, YPCS Centre in Brentwood will sit alongside our existing centres in Basildon and Chelmsford.

Renew and YPCS are long-standing partners with complementary services and a shared mission to improve the mental health and emotional wellbeing of the local community.  Both Renew and YPCS’ work with children and young people in Brentwood, Basildon and the surrounding areas is funded by the NHS Mid and South Essex Integrated Care Board.

We will continue to deliver young people’s counselling at the YPCS Brentwood centre and will be expanding to also offer counselling to children and eventually adults.

A visit from MP Alex Burghart

To mark the occasion, we were delighted to welcome Brentwood and Ongar MP Alex Burghart to the YPCS centre earlier in March.

The visit was an opportunity to announce the merger and to show the community’s appreciation for YPCS Director Claire, who is retiring from her position after almost twenty years of service.

As well as thanking Claire for her work, Mr Burghart met with Renew’s Chief Executive Nikki Schuster and Renew counsellor Vicki. The group discussed the challenges facing young people as well as the pressures on mental health services in the area.

Mr Burghart said:

“It was a privilege to meet with YPCS and Renew Counselling and Training this week, learning about the charities’ joint mission to provide high-quality counselling to those that need it.

Claire and her team are an inspiring group of people who have made a real difference to the young people of Brentwood. I would like to extend a huge thank you to Claire for her tireless efforts in leading YPCS and wish her all the best for her retirement.

The challenges facing young people are constantly changing and evolving, so it is important that this vital work continues. I look forward to seeing even more young people, children and adults having access to mental health support as YPCS joins Renew.”

Mr Burghart mentioned the visit in his column for the Brentwood Gazette, which you can read here.

Exciting opportunities

Being approached to take on this new centre is a testament to Renew’s reputation for clinical excellence. We look forward to seeing the exciting new opportunities that the merger brings.

Are you struggling to cope, but feel like you should be? Do you feel guilty about not being able to cope, because there are other people dealing with situations that are worse than yours?

These feelings are incredibly common, and something that as counsellors, we come across often. People may feel guilty for reaching out for help, worrying that they are taking up valuable support time that could be used by someone who needs the help more than them.

This is especially prevalent in copers – people who are used to getting on with things and ploughing through, regardless of how they might be feeling. We also see this way of thinking in people who are in caring jobs or careers. There is a common misconception that people in these positions are not “supposed” to need support or counselling.

Resilience is like elastic: some days you will feel like you have lots to give, but some days you may feel that if you are stretched any more you will snap – and it will hurt! Keeping mentally well and taking care of your strength and resilience is really important. The longer we are under stressful conditions, whether we are aware of them or not, the more our strength and resilience are tested.

That’s why using the support around you is so important, even if it feels as though all you are doing is offloading.

To Offload:
To relieve oneself of (a problem or worry) by talking to someone else.
“it would be nice to be able to offload your worries on to someone.”

Calling support lines such as ours, even if you are just talking through your day, actually allows your mind to begin to make sense of what is happening. Speaking to someone you don’t know, who doesn’t have any expectations of you, can help you to feel stronger and more on top of things.

Due to the current crisis, a range of people from different backgrounds, professions and walks of life will find themselves needing more help and support than usual. Regardless of how big or small you think your problem is, if something is troubling you, remember that your feelings are valid – and we are here for you.

Don’t wait until you snap – get in touch today.
