Moving into supervision is a significant professional step, and specific supervision training can help you develop the confidence, ethical awareness and practical skills needed to support other practitioners well.
The Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy Supervision is designed for experienced practitioners who are ready to deepen their practice, explore the responsibilities of the supervisor role, and provide supervision that is reflective, robust and grounded in current professional standards.

Advanced Supervision Modules
The core course offers a mixture of instructive, experiential and practical activities, in accordance with the BACP Supervision Competence Framework (2021) and the BACP Counselling and Psychotherapy Supervision Training Curriculum (2021).

Ethical and professional practice in supervision, equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), and the theories of supervision that underpin the work. - The supervisory relationship
Beginnings and endings, establishing and maintaining the supervisory relationship, relational dynamics, and working with conflicts, challenges and ruptures. - Supervising in practice
Facilitating the supervision process, responding to individual supervisee needs, adapting supervision to the supervisee’s developmental stage, and supervising online and by phone.

How the course runs
The diploma runs for seven months and is delivered in a hybrid format, combining two weeks of in-person teaching in Chelmsford with weekly online sessions.
- Two 5-day blocks in person, Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm.
- Weekly online sessions on Saturdays, 9.30am to 2.30pm.
Candidates must work with a minimum of two supervisees, log at least 20 hours of supervisory practice, undertake 8 hours of logged supervision consultation, and attend at least 80% of scheduled course delivery dates.
Application Criteria
- Practice hours:Â a minimum of 450 hours of counselling or psychotherapy practice.
- Experience:Â a minimum of two years’ post-qualifying experience.
- Professional membership:Â registered member of BACP or an equivalent professional body, adhering to an ethical framework or code of ethics, for example UKCP, COSRT, NCPS, BABCP, HCPC or BPC.
- Supervision and insurance:Â adequate supervision arrangements and professional indemnity insurance.
- Risk management:Â the ability to manage risk through previous safeguarding and risk-management training.
- Remote practice:Â experience of working in online and phone therapy.
- Personal statement:Â demonstrating your suitability and readiness for the supervisor role.
- References:Â professional reference or references from a supervisor and/or line manager who has known you professionally for at least two years.
Assessment and cost
A range of assessment methods are used: a reflective journal for each session, skills evaluation of an audio-visual recording, case studies, a consultant supervision log and report, and a supervision log. Written and verbal feedback is provided throughout the course.
Core course covering 11 subject areas: £3,120. A payment plan is available.
We also offer four additional CPD modules, each delivered over two or three days: working creatively in supervision, group supervision, supervising work with children and young people, and supervising in organisational contexts. They cost £225 for 2-day modules and £345 for 3-day modules, and dates will be published here soon.
