Renew Counselling and Training

“Sometimes, I feel like a superhero!” – Meet Renew volunteer, Jean

Volunteers are at the heart of what we do at Renew. Whether they’re offering their time to support our counsellors, helping with admin, or simply bringing their skills and enthusiasm to the team, their contributions make a real difference. Volunteering isn’t just about giving back—it’s also a chance to learn new skills, meet great people, and be part of something meaningful.
Jean, one of our amazing volunteer administrators, shares why she got involved and what she’s gained from the experience.

When I left my city job ( a hundred years ago) to care for my kids, I spent a lot of time volunteering in various roles – from helping out at schools to leading walks and working at an NHS advisory centre. But good admin roles in the voluntary sector aren’t easy to find. When I saw the ad for Renew, I didn’t think twice—I jumped at the opportunity. It’s been a great way to refresh my office skills (they were getting a bit rusty) and learn new ones in a supportive and friendly environment. It’s the kind of place where you’re encouraged to grow, and it can even lead to paid opportunities or at the very least personal growth.

Supporting a Cause I Believe In:
Volunteering at Renew has allowed me to contribute to a cause I deeply care about—making affordable counselling accessible to everyone. It’s one of those things that feels good on a personal level, knowing I’m helping others get the support they need.

Giving Back Beyond Money:
Sometimes donating money just doesn’t feel like enough, but volunteering gives me a chance to give back in a more meaningful, hands-on way. It’s one thing to write a cheque (sorry you can tell I’m old, who else still owns a cheque book?!) but it’s another to actually be part of the charity you want to help.

Meeting Great People:
Volunteering has opened up opportunities to meet new people, expand my professional network and collaborate with others who share similar beliefs and work ethics. There’s a real sense of community, and I’ve made friendships that I value immensely.

Flexible Hours to Fit My Busy Life:
Let’s face it – life can be hectic, mine certainly is! The flexibility of volunteering at Renew has been a lifesaver. I’m able to contribute without having to sacrifice time with my family or other responsibilities and enjoy my free time with the added bonus of feeling that I have earned it!

The Perks (Free Coffee and Feeling Like a Superhero):
And let’s not forget the perks of volunteering – like the free coffee, of course! But honestly, there’s something incredible about the feeling of making a difference. I can’t deny that sometimes, I feel like a superhero… minus the spandex.

So, if you’re still on the fence about volunteering, take a moment to think it over. There are so many rewards to gain, both personal and professional. You won’t regret it, I promise.
