Counselling for CHILDREN

COUNSELLING AT RENEW

Are you concerned about your child? Wondering what would be best for them?  Renew gives your child a safe space of their own, where they don’t have to worry about how anyone else will be affected by their feelings or behaviour.

Children find it easiest to express their feelings through play and art. Through these outlets, your child will be able to explore their difficulties, develop resilience and learn how their feelings can lead to certain behaviours. Children will be supported to understand themselves better and learn how to respond rather than react.

At Renew, our counsellors are specifically trained to work with children across a range of areas. Through our years of experience, we know that behaviours are often driven by feelings that can be hard to understand for children and their families.  Counselling offers the opportunity to learn a child’s unique feeling language.

“Enter into children’s play and you will find the place where their minds, hearts, and souls meet.”

-Virginia Axline, pioneer of Play Therapy

How does the process work?

get in touch

Parents and carers can contact us directly, at the centre that suits you and your child best.  You can call or email.  A manager will then talk you through the process.

Your child's assessment

Our team will book an appointment and take a non refundable deposit from you on the phone.

The assessment is an opportunity to find out more about counselling and to decide if we are the right place for your child.  We will talk with you and your child about how we can help and look to gather any information that you think might be important for us to know.

Although parents and carers will stay with their child for the first part of the assessment, we try to ensure that children are given some time on their own with the counsellor. This gives children the space to talk about things that they may not have wanted to bring up in front of their parent or carer, and to see if they are comfortable with counselling.

What happens after my child's assessment?

If, after your child’s assessment, we find that Renew is the right place for them, we will allocate them to a counsellor. This will depend on both your own/your child’s availability and the availability of a suitable counsellor. There may be a wait while we find the right counsellor for your child.

It may be that we discover that we are not the right place to fulfil your child’s needs. If this happens, we will work to signpost or refer you to a more suitable service.  It is important to us that your child gets the best support possible.

about your child's counselling sessions

Counselling will happen at the same time, in the same place with the same person every week. Counselling sessions usually last about 50 minutes.  A counselling manager will talk to you about the how long your child will attend counselling for.

Every session is confidential to the service, but there is an opportunity for parents/carers to review by appointment with the counsellor.

While your child is attending counselling at Renew, your family will have access to a Family Liaison Worker. Our Family Liaison Worker’s role is to support you during counselling. They’ll explain what happens in a counselling session and will support you with any difficulties you might be experiencing in your relationship with your child.

Paying for your child's sessions

Funding options will be discussed with you when you speak to the Centre Manager about your child’s initial assessment.

We are a charity, so we do have some funded services available. We also receive funding from external organisations to support some of the services that we deliver. However, this is not always the case – you may be required to pay what you can afford, starting from £16.00 per session. Our sessions cost us £48.00 to deliver.

When you get in touch, we will make you aware of the current funding available and ascertain your child’s eligibility. Where there is no funding, we will work out your contribution to the cost of counselling.

You can click below to learn more about how Renew is funded.

Any questions?

If you’re unsure about any of the information on this page, or would like a further chat before booking your child’s initial assessment, please do not hesitate to contact us.
